NASA-funded Wisconsin Center for Space Automation & Robotics (WCSAR) begins solving the problem of built-up ethylene gas around plants grown in the closed environment of spacecraft, which caused premature plant decay and spoilage. The Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) technology is discovered at this time. The technology uses light energy to break down pollutants and bacteria in the air. It's a common air purification technology in HVAC systems and portable air purifiers.
